    2024 Critique with
    Gavin Glakas

MAA's May tradition is to hold a critique session by one of our talented, local, professional artists.

This year we are excited to welcome local legend, Gavin Glakas to join us for a 90-minute in-person critique session. During this 90 minute session, Gavin will review 12 members’ work and provide feedback.

Members who would like to watch and listen to Gavin's comments, but do not want their work critiqued, please register accordingly.

    Guidelines

    • Please bring ONE piece of artwork you would like Gavin to critique on May 16th.
    • You must be an MAA member to participate in the critique.
    • We have 12 spots for this session.
    • Sign ups are first-come, first-served; we’ll have a small waiting list.
    • Please do not sign up for more than one critique slot; we want to ensure that many members get this opportunity.
    • Everyone (members and non-members) are welcome to watch the critique sessions.

About Gavin Glakas: Gavin Glakas grew up in Bethesda, MD, and started drawing about the time he started walking. He studied at Washington University in St. Louis and the Slade School of Fine Art in London.

After graduation, Glakas spent a year and a half working on Capitol Hill as a Senate staffer. He had planned to go to law school, but after an eight-month illness culminating in the removal of a tumor from his lung at the age of 24, he decided to pursue his lifelong ambition of a career as an artist.

Glakas began showing his work in galleries almost immediately and spent five years studying with Danni Dawson and Robert Liberace.

His paintings hang in the permanent collections of the United States Capitol, the Virginia State Capitol, the CIA, universities, museums and numerous other collections both public and private.

Glakas is represented by Principle Gallery in Alexandria, VA and Charleston, SC, and Palm Avenue Fine Art in Sarasota, FL.

He has won numerous honors for his artwork, including awards from the Portrait Society of America, the Art Renewal Center, the Plein Air Salon and the Butler Institute of American Art. His paintings have been featured on NBC News and in The Washington Post, as well as Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, Plein Air, International Artist, The American Scholar, Art Business News, The Strand and Elan magazines, and exhibited at museums and galleries throughout the country.

    Visit Gavin's website here.

MAA has arranged for a private guided tour of the exhibition “Bonnard's Worlds” at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, on Saturday, May 18 at 11:30 am.

Bonnard's Worlds, the first major retrospective of Pierre Bonnard's work at The Phillips Collection in 20 years, explores the sensory spheres of experience that fueled the French artist's creative practice.  Bonnard's immediate surroundings were the lifeblood of his work, and this exhibition is guided by those personal spaces that found expression in this art through his recording of remembered sensations.  Governed neither by chronology nor geograph, but by measures of intimacy, the exhibition transports the visitor from the larger realms in which Bonnard lived -- the landscapes of Paris, Normandy, and the South of France -- to the most intimate interior spaces of his dwellings and his thoughts.  Bonnard's Worlds reunites some of Bonnard's most celebrated works from museums across Europe and the United States, as well as many less-exhibited works drawn from private collections

Join MAA for a visit to the contemporary Glenstone Museum in Potomac, where "everything is quietly spectacular, with curated views to the outdoors that present nature as visual haiku," says The Washington Post.

Glenstone is a place that seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and landscape into a serene and contemplative environment. Guided by the personal vision of its founders, Glenstone has assembled 1,300 post-World War II artworks of the highest quality that trace the greatest historical shifts in the way we experience and understand art of the 20th and 21st centuries. They include paintings, single-artist installations, video installations, sound installations, and both indoor and outdoor sculptures. The works are presented in a series of refined indoor and outdoor spaces designed to facilitate meaningful encounters. See what’s currently on view.

Please Note: Beginning on March 21, 2024 through early 2025, the Pavilions building will be temporarily closed for renovations. During this time, the Arrival Hall, Bookstore, Gallery, Café, Patio, and grounds will remain open.

Our group tickets includes timed entry to Iconoclasts: Selections from Glenstone’s Collection in the Gallery building. Our group will need to arrive at the Gallery building within 30 minutes of arrival at Glenstone in order to enjoy the show, which operates on a timed entry model.  Our MAA group will check in and gather at the Arrival Hall at 10:00 am and will proceed as a group to the Gallery building as soon as possible afterward.  After visiting the Collection, participants may continue on to their self-guided tour at their own pace. Important note:  We need to be at the Gallery by 10:30 am for entry to the Iconoclasts exhibit, so after we depart for the Gallery we cannot guarantee entry to the Iconoclasts exhibit for any participants arriving late.  (However, participants are still welcome to enjoy the remainder of the Glenstone grounds at your own pace even if you do not join us for the Iconoclasts exhibit!)

Following our self-guided visit, members are invited to gather at the Museum cafe for a beverage and snack.

Cost: $5 for members.  Members may bring 1 additional guest for an additional $5.

Cancellation policy:  Cancellations with refunds permitted through May 20; after that date no cancellation refunds will be granted.

What to expect: Glenstone Museum encompasses two buildings, several outdoor sculptures and nearly 300 acres of landscape. To fully experience Glenstone, visitors should be prepared to spend considerable time on foot, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The parking lot is a seven-minute walk to the pavilions. A few additional things to keep in mind:

    •  Photography is not permitted indoors; outdoor photography is allowed for personal use only.
    • Sketching is permitted with pencils only.
    • The entire property is smoke-free; the use of tobacco products and e-cigarettes/vaping is not permitted.

When to meet: Our tour begins at 10:00 am sharp. We recommend parking your car no later than 9:45 am to give yourself time to walk from the parking area to the main entrance (5-7 minutes).

Getting there: Glenstone is at 12100 Glen Road in Potomac, Maryland. Parking is limited, and members are strongly encouraged to carpool or take a bus. The Montgomery County Ride On bus makes several daily stops at Glenstone on its 301 route.

Accessibility: Accessible parking is available directly in front of the Arrival Hall in the Sycamore parking grove. There is limited seating in the museum. Wheelchairs and gallery chairs are available upon request on a first come, first served basis.

This will be our final sketch night at AMP by Strathmore. Unfortunately, the venue is closing June 30. We're working to find a new place for similar events, but in the meantime, let's close it out with a great evening together!

Chat with fellow MAA artists over drinks and appetizers before we all make art together during a performance by vocalist Kyshona, a versatile and soulful artist who blends folk, rock, and R&B. We reserved several tables just for MAA members and their guests.

About the performance: Fueled by untold stories, Kyshona believes in the power of narratives to connect communities. With a background in music therapy, the curiosity of a writer, and the resolve of an activist, she channels her soulful voice in relentless pursuit of the healing power of song. Get to know Kyshona
